Welcome to Mama Kayer's Bakery

South East Virginia's leading variety bread bakery since 1910!

A Little History
Originally known as Baltimore Bakery, it was purchased by Louis Kayer in 1910.  He was am immigrant from Russia and had worked at Baltimore Bakery for a number of years.  In 1958 the bakery was renamed Mama Kayer's Bakery in observance of his wife, Ada Kayer (Mama).  The bakery was a small operation that had one real brick oven.  The bakery flourished at it's Church Street location until 1963.  The City of Norfolk used it's power of eminent domain and purchased the property.  Under the guidance of his two sons John and Max Kayer, the bakery moved to its current location on Kingwood Ave, in Norfolk, VA.  The new facility was updated with larger more mechanized equipment.  By now Johns' son Barry and Max's' son Steve were a fluent part of the operation.  Learning the ropes literally from the ground up, Barry still loves telling his tales of sweeping the floors and being lowered into ingredient tanks with a rope to clean them.  In 1974 the bakery transformed again.  The building was expanded by 10,000 sqft to its present size of 30,000 sqft.  They updated the equipment and added a 60' tunnel oven.  In 1986 the addition of a bread line and updating the roll line allowed for increased capacity.  Flour which was delivered in 100lb bags was now being delivered by rail car in bulk and pumped into one of the two 110,000lb silos.

In 1918 Brenner's Bakery was founded by Heiman Brenner and his family in Downtown Newport News.  It was well known on the peninsula as the place to stop for a fresh baked treat while going shopping in "downtown."  In the 1940s there was an argument in the family that led to a spilt.  Part of the family moved out of the area.  This explains the two Brenner's Bakeries in Northern Virginia where you can still buy fresh baked goods.  Another part of the family moved all the way out to Washington State, and last we were told it is still owned by the Brenner's family.  In the '50s Brenner's began transforming from a retail bakery to a wholesale bakery when the advent of shopping malls took over the thrill of shopping downtown.  Bucky and David Brenner took over the family tradition of baking until 1986, when they decided to retire.  The bakery was sold to Antonio and Jerry Mazzurco, two resturantors from North Carolina.  They purchased it to supply their chain of restaurants in North Carolina.  In 1988 Brenner's Bakery was sold again to John and Christine Mathis.  John had a long career in commercial baking.  He had worked for such companies as Wonder Bread, Hostess Cakes, Brownberry Ovens, Pepperidge Farms, and Lender's Bagels.  His career started as a mixer operator for Wonder Bread, and finished as Corporate Operations Manager for Lender's Bagels, before purchasing Brenner's Bakery.  Christine had a strong and lucrative past in accounting.  Together they would work hard with the help of their 4 sons; Jason, Steven, Daniel, and Kevin, and of course some good old fashioned word of mouth advertising on behalf of David Brenner.  In 1992 David Brenner died, just about 1 year before they broke ground for the new bakery.  The new bakery was updated with 85% new equipment, and Jason started to become more involved in the bakery taking over as plant manager.  As the other sons grew up they began venturing out to college and careers of their own.  The marriage of Jason to Jennifer in 1996 invited Jennifer into the family and the familles tradition of baking.  In March of 2000, Brenner's Bakery was shaken up when John Mathis died of a major heart attack.  Now the bakeries management composed of Christine, Jason, Daniel and Jennifer.  April 2002 a deal was worked with Y'Not Bakery, to purchase them.

In the summer of 2004 Barry and Steve Kayer contacted Christine and Jason about the possibility of merging the companies together.  After some talks and Christine's hesitation to continue on baking without her husband, Brenner's Bakery was sold to Mama Kayer's Bakery.  Jason was the only one that stayed on to work for Mama Kayer's.  On April 1, 2007, Mama Kayer's Bakery was sold to Jason Mathis and Willie Beachboard, a 24 year veteran of Mama Kayer's.  Jason and Willie incorporated themselves as Quality Baking, Inc., to show their dedication to ensuring that we have the highest level of quality baked goods and service, hands down.  John Mathis used to say, "I don't care to be the biggest bakery.  I just want to be known as the best bakery."
